firsts.

i'd be excommunicated from the family if i didn't take a 'first day' picture.
so here she is.
whites and all.
nurse emily in the making.

semester two.

we're off and running,
actually sprinting to be more exact.
semester two.
boom!

here s a little glimpse of my next 12 weeks of school.

maternity clinical at john muir hospital in walnut creek: rotating through antepartum, postpartum (mother-baby), labor and delivery, NICU, and the well baby nursery.

community health clinical at a san francisco general hospital outpatient clinic: not solidified yet but i will be rotating through a health promotion unit at the hospital doing wellness assessment, disease maintenance, pre and post op assistance, head to toe exams, wound care, immunizations, patient education, procedure help, and whatever else they throw at me.

advanced pathophysiology and pharmacology: like i said before, death by patho/pharm. dr. lemos round two but advanced. hardest class ever. brace yourself.

health promotion: lecture to accompany maternity and community health looking at wellness across the lifespan as it related to primary and secondary prevention rather than disease and acute hospitalization.

instructional design and healthcare informatics: fancy for evidence based practice research with an emphasis in patient education, information literacy, cultural sensitivity, and professional leadership through the clinical nurse leader role.

oh and throw in there a few standardized nursing exams, clinical preceptor evaluations, skills tests for the hospital, and case manager new grad meetings.
there you have it.
judging by the first two days (med calc tests on day one- really?!)
you may not be seeing much of me on the blog but wanted to write this down because there are too many acronyms when i try to explain this on the phone to you fun people.

as for that week or so of no blogging, i was busy on my week break. wahoo.
hanging at home with the family and celebrating mothers day
shopping with mom and lunching with dad
pampering my poor little post patella fracture/sock wearing toes with a pedi
visiting the boy down south for some serious 'r and r' and delicious picnic dates
getting sunburnt and drinking beer at 3pm (like every good nurse does)
driving from northern to southern california and back (but its all worth it to see that cute boy)
enjoying a few little moments of extend family and friends time
trying to catch a breather before this big semester

hope your tuesday is treating you well!
enjoy your wednesday and i'll talk to you soon!

embarrassing and awesome.

you know its finals week in nursing school when...

::: your highlighter actually runs out of ink, rather than disappearing or drying up after several years

:::  your most used iPhone apps are micromedx and facebook for classmate communication

:::  usb drives hang from your keychain with pride and a great deal of valuable documents

:::  coffee, string cheese, and tangerine cuties make up the majority of your diet

:::  all your normal clothes are clean and all your comfy clothes are in the hamper

:::  the best part of your week is free doughnuts from the nursing school on 'dead day'

:::  the last thing you searched on you phone was 'uretheral stricture'

:::  'it's only 11pm' gets thrown around often

:::  dinner combinations like cereal, carrots and ranch, and grapes seem appealing

::: you talk more about blood, bile, brains, and bowels than anything else

some think its embarrassing, but i totally think it's awesome.

appreciation.

happy national nurses appreciation week!

thanks to all the nurses that care for those i know and love-
excited to be like you someday!
free bbq hamburgers, drinks, and dessert for all nursing students-
i'll take it!

on the road and almost one semester down.
come saturday, i'll have five semesters to go!
wahoo!

{an addition to humor you}

May 7, 2012

honestly.

it's only monday.
how is that even possible?

leave it to pinterest to have cute prints, in artsy formats, with bright colors,
and inspirational quotes to brighten this long study day.
oh, and those coffees today didn't hurt:)
hope you are all enjoying the fabulous weather (wherever you may be)!

moving along.

since the last post, not much has changed.
sadly,
i think i am still in comfy athletic clothes,
slightly wired on caffeine,
slowly crossing things of my 'to-do' list,
and
studying.

ventured out to noe valley today.
heard so many good things about their little bakery that i decided to treat myself.
so-gosh-darn-cute.
like i've said before,
i seriously have a major obsession with this city.
some little snapshots of my outings.
let's be real though.
path/pharm, you may be the death of me.
12pm saturday, may 12th... come soon please.
and this is another little product from the weekend.
our global health project for the nursing poster symposium this week.
done.

exhausted and few more things to check off the list.
good night folks (if you are reading this soon)
and if you are catching this on monday- have a great day!

May 1, 2012

life lately.

iPhone pictures to fill you in on the non-studying time.
let's be honest, nothing is too exciting around here- just lots of studying:)

fabulous birthday gifts.
my beautiful new wrap watch, farmers market tote, and orchid.
in addition to lots of other great things!
little strolls here and there to grab a coffee or groceries.
and a little sunday brunch and trip to the ferry building with a friend (al!) on sunday was a pleasant break.
i heard nursing will drive you to drinking but so far nursing school has driven me to painting.
when you lay in bed and repeat the classification, brand name, trade name, indications, dosage, pharmacokinetics, side effects, adverse effects, special nursing consideration forty times over before you fall asleep, getting out of bed and getting your mind off of drugs (that sounds good- not) isn't such a bad idea.

i now have a little collection of 6x6 inch watercolors.
plus it's a fun little switch from pathophysiology and pharmacology.

nothing too fancy- just being a nursing student most of the time- and loving it!
