centered.

i'll be honest, as much as i have tried to embrace this in-between time while i wait for a job to come around and after all of the constant stimulation of twenty-something straight years of school culminating in the craziness of masters projects, i am quite far from relaxed.
while i am firm in my desire to pursue the best possible position for me, i remain restless in the everyday.

if it weren't for my little friend yoga, i don't think i would be sane.
(via)

the past few months have given me the blessing of time.
time in which i have used to explore several different types of yoga and made it a conscious practice to set aside time to practice mindfulness in the midst of my always-thinking-little-mind.
my inner contentment has never been more centered than in the little hours of the day on my mat.

and to that i say,
om.

cleanse.

in efforts to detoxify (and lets be honest- lose a few pounds) i am cleansing this week in a not-so-big way.

this coming weekend i will be heading down south for my future sister's (my boyfriends, brothers fiancé- sounds really distant but i feel like we are already family) bachelorette party. the thought of laying next to a bunch of super cute, skinny girls makes me cringe but i have been working hard in the gym, getting outdoors, eating my greens, and soaking up the sun to instill some confidence in my physical self. to bolster these measures, i am supercharging my health this week with a daily cleanse, yoga, and good ol' fashion extra healthy eating.

because i got a great deal at a local juicery, i will be supplementing some bought fresh pressed juices with my homemade smoothies and meals. green juice is the staple of the detox then meals are filled in with alkaline, dark green veggies, raw fruits, and wholesome fibers. hoping that this reenergizes me and
helps me feel more comfortable when it comes to bikini time.
green juice ingredients:
1 cucumber
3 celery stalks
3 kale leaves
1 apple
1/3 c. parsley sprigs
1/2 lemon
feed all ingredients into a juicer and remove solids or blend all ingredients but substitute fresh pressed apple juice for the apple and add coconut water.

happy cleansing!
(ps i'll let you know how i feel in the coming week!)

she moved.

don't mind that little minor (well maybe not so minor) blog break.
i moved!
moved in with my bestie- miss mia.
we live in tiniest, cutest, coziest little studio in the middle of all-that-is-fun san francisco!
so that's where i have been.
but hello again, i am back after a few too many 'its been 15 days' texts from my sister in regards to blogging.
woops.

hope you are having a great day!

February 4, 2013

juiced.

it's my new thing,
along with every other 'new year, new you, wanna be hip, 20 something female' in america.
but it love it and even without a fancy vitamix (ah someday!)
i have been making the most delicious smoothies and juices.
try these. they are super yummy.

i also love...
kale + blueberry + pineapple + almond milk.
mango + coconut water + pineapple + pomegranate seeds.

mmm, refreshing!

welcome 2013.

hello everyone.
and welcome 2013!

it's been a fun, busy, festive, and filling last few weeks.
sorry for the minor break in blogging but i am back in full force.

this year i resolve to...
improve my terrible posture.
work out a minimum of three days a week.
perfect homemade bagels and lemon poppyseed muffins.
graduate with honors.
pass the nclex nursing exam the first time.
taste, explore, or walk bi-monthly in san francisco for a new adventure.

what are you resolving to do?

December 10, 2012

hobbies.

what's your hobby?
is it the opposite of your day job or parallel with your line of work?
do you do it daily, weekly, monthly?
if you don't have one, do you want one?

i have a plethora of hobbies.
and i think the greatest thing about having lots of hobbies is that
there is always something to do, explore, see, or create.

i am fascinated by the human body, disease, health, and the psyche.
i enjoy painting, crafting, and creating art.
i would love to cook, bake, feed friends, and entertain everyday.
i love hiking, kayaking, and long walks.
i am intrigued by other cultures, travel, the outdoors, and people from different walks of life.
and i am always looking for ways to better myself and my relationships.

with all of these things, i try to find outlets to channel my interest
because i find great purpose in exercising all of my passions.
in efforts to help you find your hobby of choice, i have put together a little 'hobby helpers guide'.
a few hobbies that i really want to pursue more...
throwing pottery, reading, and finding my nitch in an a exercise program that i love.

let me know how you like this guide. hit on any new possible hobbies that you would like to take on?

January 23, 2012

welcome to the 415.

hello from san francisco!
i am officially moved in, setup, and ready to go.
who would have thought that little uptight, cautious, anal retentive emily would be living in downtown san francisco. the answer is no one ten years ago but times have changed and i could not be more excited to be living here! sf is incredible and i am already loving everything (well maybe not crutching up hill in the rain- but it's all good)! i have already visited a few lovely spots and can't wait until i am off of these crutches and able to run about the city.

class starts tomorrow at USF in the school of nursing department where i will be working on my masters in nursing- clinical nurse leader and registered nurse generalist degree (dang girl). super excited and mildly in denial of that whole school/studying thing at the moment. pretty sure the short paper and three reading assignments that are due tomorrow in my first class will change that around quickly...

well, more to come this week.
hope you staying out of the rain and having a great monday!

p.s. thanks mom and dad for everything!
p.s.s. if you're reading this and are not a follower, you should become one- it'll brighten my day.

(and yes, i am tackling the hilly city on crutches and in a brace- keeping those corners up)

November 27, 2011

some BIG news.

you know its serious when i bring out the capital letters...

I'M GOING TO GRAD SCHOOL!
WAHOO!
the day after thanksgiving i was accepted to university of san francisco (my top choice) and i will start my masters in nursing at the end of january.

COULD NOT BE MORE EXCITED!
so, so, so thankful.

September 15, 2011

urban girl.

slowly learning the ins and outs of the big city.

traffic (15 miles is approximately 40 minutes, on a good day),
celebrities (slightly star struck as i shopped with kelly osborne and lo from 'the hills'),
multiway crosswalks (they are so cool, admit it),
walking (pretty much have to put a down payment on a 3 hour parking spot),
multicultural (feeling ignorant and wishing i spoke a different language),
white coats, suits, and skyscrapers (why do i think stethoscopes are so incredibly cool?),
fancy cars (absolutely swear that 'bumblebee' from transformers was in front of me),
fashion (holy moly these people are dressed to the nines),
true ethnic food ('oh my gosh thai food'),
whole foods (enough said),
shopping (can you say champaign appetite, beer wage?),
anything and everything you could imagine,
pretty much.

one big shock for a small town country girl.
but im loving it!

september.

september 1st is the beginning of a big new start for me.

today i...
1. move out of my townhouse that i have called home for the past two years with my roomies.
2. officially lock-in/final deadline/am under review for my first grad application. yikes.
3. begin the countdown of the (non-double digit) number of days until the move to la. which mean living in a new town for the first time (besides study abroad).
4. for the first time start a part-time(!) education this month. unlike any other september for the past 22 years.
5. move away from family and begin a closer-long-distance relationship with my bff/bf (crazy and feeling old). hooray.

and im pumped.
happy september peps!

week completiONE

week one is complete! well except for maybe a little dessert tonight... this week has been great and im really happy with how i feel and the changes in daily life that this raw food diet creates. its great to not have to count calories or fat, stick to one slice of this or that, or be tempted by that hunk of french bread sitting at eye level in my cabinet. i love that all of my food yummy and there is no tempting when all of your food is healthy and raw! ive been messing around at "new frontiers natural foods market" and getting quite aquatinted with veggie mixtures and cold-pressed dressing concoctions. my average day goes something like this...

upon waking: my version of "green lemonade" made out of TJ green juice (spirulina, kale, spinach, wheatgrass blend), gravenstien raw apple juice, lemon juice, and a bit of raw honey. i don't have a juicer so this is the best way for me to get the nutrients from the detox

breakfast: 20 oz. fruit smoothie- usually acai blueberry or orange juice, mixed frozen berries, pineapple or mango, honey, and pomegranate seeds

snack: fruit, fruit juice, or fruit iced tea

lunch: large veggie salad with raisins, seeds, and gold elixir or honey mustard dressing

snack: dried unsulfured fruit, homemade breakfast bars, larabar, or seeds

dinner: varieties of baked or roasted veggies, raw salad or cut veggies, and sprouted grain tortilla or bread

dessert: almond butter and apple or larabar

now this is just a little bit of an oversimplification but overall its been pretty close. im surprised at how little i have been craving foods that i "cannot" have (except like i said before i am missing cheese, sandwiches, and foofy coffees). so im a pretty, darn happy girl!

March 25, 2010

rested, replenished, and RAWring to go.

i mentioned it a few weeks ago, but recently i have been reading up on different detoxes and i found one that i am in love with. so today is the start to my raw food lifestyle change. after watching “food inc.” and reading natalia rose’s “the raw food detox diet” book over this spring break im on my way to veganism…. not really, but close (i have a love affair with cheese- really though). basically it comes down to this: i want to lose weight, i need to eat more veggies, and im pretty grossed out now by food “standards” and chemicals today. hence- emily is doing a raw food cleanse! (well 85% raw to begin with and increasing up to 98%)… im nervous.

my day will consist of juiced “green lemonade” (a juice blend of celery, kale, lemon, apple, and honey/ginger) upon waking, breakfast, lunch and snacks of 100% raw foods. this “raw until dinner” will be followed by dinner consisting primarily of raw foods with some cooked items aswell.

foods on the cleanse include (fyi this is not a comprehensive list):
raw vegetables*
raw fruit
raw unslated nuts and seeds
unsulfured dried fruit
almond butter
raw maple syrup and honey
almond milk
legumes and black beans
brown and wild rice
grilled fish
raw goat or sheep cheese
coconut milk and flesh
limited poultry
cold-pressed oils
*primarily raw, uncooked green veggies; with limited amounts of starch veggies, e.g. potatoes, butternut squash, and pumpkin)

now lets be honest. im a newbie and im going to mess up but my plan is to keep you informed with great recipes and hopefully youll see some great progress along with me! I will be strictly sticking to this for exactly one month (then cheating a bit on my 21st birthday-woops, don’t guilt trip me, my body will do that for me the day after) then returning quickly after. im super excited now that i have read about it a bunch and im ready for some healthy eating!

have you ever gone raw? cleansed? dieted and failed and then dieted and failed again? (me too!)
